WA Electricity Plans 2026
Western Australia's electricity market works differently from the east coast. Synergy holds a regulated monopoly for households south of the 26th parallel (most of the population). Horizon Power covers the rest. You cannot shop around for a retailer in WA the way you can in NSW or Victoria. But there are still ways to control your bill.
Synergy flat tariff ~31.5c/kWh, 106c/day supply. Last updated June 2026.
The WA Market Structure
Synergy serves Perth and the southwest — about 1.1 million customers. Horizon Power covers remote and regional areas, roughly 47,000 customers. Both are government-owned. No private retailers compete for residential customers in WA. This means no switching to get a better rate — but it also means no confusing comparison process. What you pay is what the government sets.
Perth Rates
- Synergy regulated tariff: ~31.5c/kWh usage
- Supply charge: ~106c/day
- Solar feed-in: 2.25c/kWh (lowest in Australia)
- 1.1 million customers on this tariff
Regional Rates
- Horizon Power: ~34-38c/kWh in remote areas
- Supply charge varies by location
- Government subsidy: $527 million in 2025-26
- Subsidy keeps rates from being unaffordable
Perth vs Regional Rates
Synergy's regulated tariff sits around 31.5c/kWh usage and 106c/day supply in 2026. Horizon Power customers in remote areas pay more — roughly 34-38c/kWh depending on location. The WA government subsidises Horizon Power with $527 million in the 2025-26 budget to keep regional rates from soaring. Without that subsidy, remote households would face even steeper bills.
Solar in WA
WA has some of the best sunlight in the world. Perth averages 8.8 hours of sun per day. Synergy pays 2.25c/kWh for solar feed-in as of 2026, the lowest feed-in tariff in Australia. The real value of solar in WA is self-consumption — use what you generate during the day to avoid buying from the grid at 31.5c. A 6.6kW system in Perth typically pays for itself in 3-4 years.
How to Save in WA
Synergy's peak is 3pm-9pm. Shift dishwasher and laundry to midday when solar is generating. Avoid running high-consumption appliances during peak hours.
Synergy offers a free smart meter upgrade. This lets you track usage in real time and identify which appliances are costing you the most.
With WA's low 2.25c feed-in tariff, a battery makes financial sense. Store your solar generation for evening use instead of exporting it for pennies.
The Energy Assistance Payment provides $336 per year for concession card holders. The WA government also offers the Hardship Utilities Grant Scheme for households in financial difficulty.
