Electricity Plans for Renters
Renters need different things from an electricity plan than homeowners. No lock-in contracts. No exit fees. Easy to transfer when the lease ends. You also probably cannot install solar panels, which limits your options but simplifies the decision.
What Renters Should Look For
No lock-in contracts
Never sign a 12 or 24 month energy contract as a renter. Your lease might end before the contract does, and exit fees are painful. Alinta, Origin, and most smaller retailers offer no lock-in plans. AGL has some lock-in plans; skip those.
No exit fees
Even without a lock-in contract, some plans charge a "disconnection fee" or "early termination fee." Ask before signing. The answer should be "$0".
Lowest possible usage rate
As a renter, your only lever is usage. You cannot add solar panels. You cannot upgrade insulation. You cannot install a heat pump. Pick the plan with the lowest c/kWh rate and move on.
Best Retailers for Renters
Lowest rates, no lock-in contracts, no exit fees. The obvious first choice for renters.
Digital-first, simple app, competitive rates. Good if you want a modern experience without the big retailer baggage.
100% carbon neutral, no lock-in. Costs slightly more than Alinta but the green credentials are real.
One Thing To Watch
Some landlords include electricity in the rent. If your lease says "electricity included", you cannot choose your own retailer. The landlord controls it. This is more common in share houses and granny flats. Make sure you know who holds the electricity account before you sign the lease.
